During an herbal medicine consultation, the acupuncturist will review the patient's medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle. The acupuncturist will ask about the patient's goals and any medications or supplements they are currently taking. Based on this information, the acupuncturist will prescribe an herbal formulation of typically 5-10 medicinal herbs. These formulations may be in the form of capsules, granules, or raw herbs. The patient may be asked to keep a symptom diary or track their progress in some other way. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor progress and adjust the prescription as needed. The goal of herbal medicine is to help the patient manage or overcome their presenting problem(s). From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, herbal medicine also helps to correct the roots of illess and accelerate the body's innate biochemical healing mechanisms.
